About Meital

Meital ShemeshIn 2011 I opened a studio for teaching the Pilates fitness system and physical therapy in Moshav Shdema, located in the Gderot Regional Council. In addition to my work in the studio, I teach Pilates and treat severely disabled war veterans at the 'Beit Halochem' center in Tel-Aviv as well as giving lectures about Pilates at physical therapy centers around the country.

My love for the Pilates fitness system and especially for the therapeutic aspect, started during my military service as a medic, where I encountered soldiers whose injuries required long periods of physical rehabilitation.

After my discharge from the army I read a lot about the system and practiced it for several years before deciding to study it in more depth and become a qualified teacher.

In 1996 I did a course with Dalia Mantver specializing on Pilates mattress exercises. During that period I taught in several establishments, coordinating the dance and Pilate's department at the 'Geller' Center in Kfar Saba and teaching Pilates to professional dance groups in Kfar Saba. I also studied for a first degree in Physical Education specializing in Rehabilitation and Sport for the Disabled. I chose to do my practical training in Rehabilitation and Hydrotherapy at 'Beit Issie Shapiro' which is a center for the treatment of children with developmental disabilities in Ra'anana. I fell in love with the place and stayed on to work there for 8 years.

Between 2007-2010 I studied Pilates apparatus exercises at the Balance Body University in San Francisco. The emphasis of the course was on Rehabilitation and was taught by the leading instructors - Elizabeth Larkam, Katy Santos and Tom McCook. During that period I taught Pilates apparatus exercise as well as working as a hydrotherapist at the Abilities United Swim Center - a hydrotherapy center for physical and developmental disabilities. My work there inspired me to use Pilates in the water as a rehabilitation technique and I developed a program called 'Poolates' - Pilates in the water, utilizing the properties of water (providing support and resistance) which complement and work beautifully with the Pilates system of exercise.
